This is a very readable book that even a layman could use. My one caveat is that the chapter questions are far too simplistic. They cover the material in the chapter, but aren't good preparation for the exam.
On the plus side, this book comes with a CD that includes an extra test prep questions as well as a pdf of the book. However, even these questions, while more difficult than those in the book are still not enough to pass the exam if you have limited experience in IT security. If a person fails the exam, it's not the fault of the various books. I also used Darril Gibson's security plus book and it too was excellent.
The problem with multiple choice tests is that you are presented with two right answers to the question. You have to know which answer is more correct than the other, because there is the COMP TIA way of thinking and there is the real world way of thinking.
They aren't the same. As a result, what you consider is the right answer, may not be right and that has messed up a lot of people. If you have some experience in IT, this book may be all that you need. For people with less experience, having a couple of books along with some of the testing APPs could be helpful.

Know authentication and cryptography. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Purchased the kindle version 2 weeks ago. Took and pass the exam today. The material and presentation was very good. Take the time to do the Performance-Based questions at the end of the chapters--I ignored them and thus wasn't prepared for them on the actual exam.
The Total Tester was very good but not enough questions The book boasts but I believe are in the book. Would have been nice if the Total Tester included those questions and the performance questions. This book was more useful to me than the other kindle book I purchased a month ago: SY 6th Edition Dulaney. At first I used it as a comprehensive guide to assist me with studying, but after realizing some of the information within the book is blatantly incorrect, I now have to verify my facts before committing them to memory.
A perfect example: They are not. In addition to some glaring errors, the book at times falls completely short of information that will be included in the exam. There is some good information in there, but I would not recommend anyone use this as their only means of study. I am a college professor and am using this for my Survey of Information Security course. The material is presented in logical fashion as opposed to many other books and gives enough details for students to understand the subject material.
It is pages of good information that gives you a broad understanding of Information Security. If my students wish to take the test after the semester, they can, but it is really a great book to understand the basics of Information Security. First of all, I passed the test and I used this book as only martial to prepare the exam. The book was written well to help you get your related knowledge strength. I enjoyed reading it. The reason I gave it 4 starts is because the test has been changed quite a bit, the book itself is not self sufficient to cover all the items I had during the test.
If I don't have years of experiences, by just reading the book I probably would fail the test. The test I had included 66 questions, 90 minutes and many simulator labs.
Covers the material needed to pass the exam. I had held the previous SYO certification so this new exam wasn't too much of a step up in knowledge. The actual test itself was WAY different This will keep me busy for a year or two. I like the digital version that comes with it for reading on-the-go.
It was exactly what I was expecting and in great condition! I look forward to learning a lot from this book and putting it to good use in my career!! See all 34 reviews.
